ODI and Test Championship Rankings

The ICC ODI Championship arrived in 2002. One Day International (ODI) is limited overs cricket that is unique to test cricket in that the 10 teams with “Test Status” are involved, but as well as this 6 of the top associate and affiliate members can also compete (5 of these are associates and Afghanistan is an affiliate). For a reminder of those 10 Test Status teams, we have alphabetically Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies and Zimbabwe. The top 6 teams with ODI status are Ireland (11th), Netherlands (12th), Kenya (13th), Afghanistan (14th), Scotland (15th) and Canada (16th).

ODI Championship Rankings: The top 13 teams appear on the main table, whilst various associate and affiliate members then follow in a second table. These rankings can be climbed via performance in the ICC World Cup Qualifiers. Historically, Australia has been the most successful team in ODI cricket with the highest rating of 140. Australia has that 1st spot ranking today as well with a current rating of 130. At this time we follow with, Sri Lanka in 2nd place, India are in 3rd place, South Africa are in 4th place and England sit in 5th place. The current ICC ODI Championship rankings can be found on the bottom right widget (alongside the Test rankings) covering the top 10.

The ICC Test Championship arrived in 2003. This competition is played out between the 10 teams that have achieved “Test Status” from the ICC (International Cricket Council). The 10 teams that currently have Test Status include listed alphabetically: Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies and Zimbabwe. The format of these test cricket matches are played out over 5 days, which is designed as the most “Ultimate test of playing ability and endurance in the sport”. This is why just the 10 Test Status teams are involved in this competition. They are also each ranked on their ongoing performance.

Test Championship Rankings: Historically, Australia has been the most successful team in test cricket with the highest rating of 143. Recently Australia have lost their dominance in test cricket though and have fallen behind the rankings currently sitting in 4th spot. Above them and the others we have England who are sitting in 1st spot with a 125 rating. Sitting below England is South Africa in 2nd spot and then India sit in the 3rd place. The current ICC Test Championship rankings can be found on the bottom right widget (alongside the ODI rankings). Only 9 teams out of 10 are currently ranked as Zimbabwe has played insufficient matches to qualify.
